The interior of a fortress (Dzongs) or any other sacred religious sites in Bhutan are adorned with intricate murals. The wooden pillars providing structural stability are handcrafted into an exquisite woodwork. The inner sanctum is ornamented with meticulously sculpted clay statues gilded with gold and these statues are offered scarf made of premium fabric sewed by the best tailors in the country and the collection of sacred text penned with gold are a display of an amazing art of calligraphy passed down from generations.
The exterior structure that houses all these artworks is equally focused. Traditional Bhutanese woodwork, masonry, metalwork and paintings are highlighted in all Bhutanese architectures. These arts and crafts are usually grandiose in structures like Dzongs and palaces while traces of it can be noticed in a commoner's house. Pilgrims visiting these sacred places to offer prayers are dressed in the national dress (Gho and Kira). The range of Gho and Kira patterns and colors are a testament to the successful preservation of the classic textile designs and the innovation of new designs.
With the arts and crafts permeating at every conceivable level in the Bhutanese cultural, one can discern the significant role arts and crafts have played in the creation of unique cultural heritage Bhutan is gifted with. Recognizing the importance of the preservation of these heritage and to promote continuity of the tradition, these vocational skills were recognized and categorized into the 13 Traditional Arts and Crafts of Bhutan in the 17th century.
Zorig Chusum which is a direct translation of the 13 Arts and Crafts is an institution in Thimphu that offers multiple year courses in these areas of specialization to the local students. The institution has become a major tourist attraction. Tourists can catch students perform live demonstration of their craft and also buy souvenir.
